ROR trident 1

[Promethius]

I got this trident from Neil in 2021. I was keen to try a ROR, so it went onto the rock in a deep pot 2023. I’ve been using Neil’s aluminium foil technique, with annual repotting to address root escape. Mistakes have been made, especially the choice of rock, but I’m in this far, so will keep working on it.

The angle will increase next year: the plan is for the rock to end up at a similar orientation to where it appears before repotting this year, if I can secure it safely to a suitable pot. This year is to start exposing roots and encourage the weedy one around the back to thicken: I need the back one to be stronger so the tree doesn’t push itself off the rock, which it’s already trying to do. I’ve covered everything with coir for the moment to protect the fresh roots from frost. The trunk diameter is about 3cm at the base.

I’d be interested in critique and thoughts. Are the roots down the front too boring: worth chopping these and putting it all back into a deep pot for a year? I was also considering chiselling off the base of the rock so it fits into a pot better.

Coming along nicely, Can you redirect one of the stronger roots under and around to help the weaker root ? Instead of chiseling you might be better off using an angle grinder with a masonry cut off disc, less impact.
