I have decided to keep them. The tree kept wanting to put out sprouts on that side of the trunk so I will work them into the eventual shape of the tree.

If I don't like it in 10 or 20 years I can always cut them off!

If its the flu seems a lot going around in Vic atm . Ive been cleansing my work area every day because i'm surrounded by sickos and im heading overseas next week .Hope Grant gets better soon .

Hi, I no longer own the tree, I sold it about 2 years ago, It stayed in great shape till then and was an easy tree to look after, it just needed enough water and fertiliser, then regular defoliation and it went fine.

I shortened all growth back as necessary and trimmed compound leaf back as well.

This is a very vigorous tree. I will defoliate it in about 4 to 6 weeks and see how its going.

Hi Grant, I understand you don't own this tree anymore but I was hoping you could shed some light on your pruning for display methods?

I have a few Ash's and I have found the foliage to be very messy so I generally shortened the compound leaf back to 2 pairs on the one compound leaf. I also have found defoliating early in Spring once the leaves harden off, and a second defoliation after growth slows/stops in peak of summer to be beneficial.

I have heard a few people mention that as the tree ages (mine would be 30+ years old) not to defoliate so I am wondering on the best practice in your experience.

Any tips or techniques would be greatly appreciated
