I think I remember that NOTHOFAGUS GUNNII is reasonably hard to come across..... good luck getting Bonsai stories about this rare unit.

Thanks Mark, I’m aware they are rare but some people may have tried and succeeded or failed. I’d like to know their stories on these rare plants if anyone is willing to share them. Its the only way yo learn.

I pretty sure they would rely on a specific mycorrhiza. Or at least some kind. Maybe scrape of some soil from under a beech tree and include that? I kept one going for a while many years ago but I didn't know much about it. I recommend an un-glazed terracotta pot (cooler roots) and semi shade most of the year. A rather gritty lean P/mix low in P. and probably lowish in N too.
That's how I would start. Do you have one??

Thanks for the tip I have heard they are difficult. Would soil from a cunninghamii be suitable do you think? Also would something like a cactus mix be good as it would drain better. Sending pm

Probably. Just make sure the P is low coz sometimes they add it if the mix is not for natives.

Hardly a useful parallel but i have a young Huon Pine growing very happily in native mix so i would imagine that the Nothofagus should also tolerate it well enough.

Do you have access to N. Gunnii?

Nothofagus Fusca doesn't seem to be too fussy. I managed to find one several years ago. Pretty rare I believe - in Aus. anyway.
It was tiny sampling when I purchased it and now after 5 years of growing on, it's about ready for a bonsai pot.
