Jacaranda Seedlings

About a month ago I found a bunch of Jacaranda seed pods in my yard ... I didn't really even know what they were at first, until I did a little research as I then noticed more up in the tree, these had fallen from the giant Jacaranda we have. They looked like harden dried leaves from another tree which blew across and got snagged.

Now I now what they are, am looking for them all round the neighbourhood!!!

TL:DR - cracked open a few pods, planted 50+ seeds ... got excited when 1-2 weeks later I had 8 or so seedlings spring up, as below:

Then, another week later, BANG! Now have 50+ seedlings:

You can probably spot where I went lazy and threw a few into the same holes?

Wondering how long to leave these before moving them into bigger pots? Separating them, etc?

It really depends on your aftercare and temp. You don’t want to disturb the roots too much and you don’t want them drying out once potted. You could just leave them to be safe or try half. Just make sure to keep the water up if you do decide to pot them up perhaps sit them in a tray of water till you see more leaves start to grow. Then water as you would any other potted plant as required.

I took the path of least effort ... so far done nothing but water them. They're going well, so just ordered a few pots, will take Kirky's advice, and carefully move half out into pots.

Well done! They are obviously sooo much easier to propagate from seed than poincianas. As Kirky said, keep the water up to them and they should do well.

Few of the bigger climps kept the groupings as I didn't want to damage the roots, these were potted 16th January, pics from today:

Been walking around the neighborhood lately, grabbing all the neglected pods off the ground. Just cracked all the pods, must have over 200 seeds, will plant some more, though might be a bit late now.

Lovely stuff Daniel! Goes to show - even with seedlings we can make interesting layouts and landscapes ... even if your intent is to protect the roots - keeping little groupings makes the journey from seed to something more substantial really interesting - I reckon anyway. Nice photo composition too.

Yes, they bud back like crazy when chopped. I've read that some people avoid any cuts or pruning in late summer to avoid dieback so it might be worth holding off until next spring.

I too can't wait for flowers ... though some research says it can be anywhere from 7 to 14 years before they flower, so I'm bracing for a long game, haha.

Will have to photograph some of the individuals, thanks MJL for the comments re: groupings. Trying to let nature dictate the designs, as much as possible, plus didn't have enough pots ... haha.

Been a while ... thought I'd update, my approach so far has mainly been neglect on these, with a splash of water. Note these are all the same age, find it fascinating the variety of shapes and sizes.
