Defoliation of Ginkgo

Post by Grant Bowie »

Hi all, I defoliated a small Ginkgo about 6 weeks ago and it came back into leaf about 2 weeks ago. It increased ramification by 20% , it started with 5 buds and came back with 6 buds of roughly equal vigour. Leaves are a bit smaller and somewhat finer.

Anyone else had experience with Ginkgo defoliation, good or bad?

Full defoliation or partial?

I’ve always removed the unnecessarily large leaves, but never fully defoliated Ginkgo before

Here is the Ginkgo after defoliation and the middle bud on the left is new. This tree is 33 yrs old from tube stock. I bought 100 and 1 had low twists.

I had similar results a few years ago when I defoliated the entire tree.
This year, I only cut off all the larger leafs. Surprisingly, all the new leafs that came back were smaller (about half the original size).
I also got a few extra buds. I have been considering a 2nd defoliation, but worried it might weaken the tree too much if I do it this late.

Got my Ginkgo out from where I can't see it easily, only to discover I had done a cut on all the big leaves already, must have been in October-ish. I couldn't see any new buds anywhere, so this time I removed all the leaves....
