Ginkgo Biloba hasn't woken up yet

Post by BonsaiPancake »

I'm in Sydney and the early heat this year meant everything has woken up very early. That is, except my Ginkgo Biloba.

It's not showing any signs of bud swell or anything really. The buds are quite large but this is what they looked like when the leaves fell off in Autumn.

Scratching the bark in a few spots shows green so seemingly it's alive.

Just before the warmer weather I repotted it into a larger grow pot and didn't take off too many roots (only removed ones out of place). I wonder if I worked on it too early. It's in a mix of 20% organic, 80% inorganic, which is the same mix it was in previously.

Should I be concerned or would you expect this to wake up soon? Is there anything else I can do to check on its health other than wait?

Don’t stress, mine are only just starting to show green in the buds here in Melbourne now and everything else has been completely leafed out and extending for weeks now.

Ginkgo just seem to always be the last to get going in spring from my experience

I'm in Adelaide and my ginkos are also just beginning to show signs of life again. So don't you worry, they're always later than most. 😊 Post some pics when they do, doesn't matter what stage they're at, we all wanna see :geek:

Same same. Mine don’t really swell before burst anyway, they just looks bit green all of a sudden then they’re out. Last year it took me several days to notice mine had leafed out quite substantially, presumably because I thought from when I last looked at it that it would be a least a week away. So it missed its repot last year Image

Perth checking in. No signs yet but it might be the cuttings that pop first.

Ginkgo and Zelkova are always the last to start in spring. There's always that nagging doubt because everything else is growing and then they start.

PS. Scratching the bark never helped get a tree to start growing. It only opens wounds that can possibly let infection in. Do not do it :!:

I'm in South Western Australia and my Ginko are just starting to show the tiniest of green from the buds today while all my other deciduous are mostly in leaf now. Seems they are just late bloomers as others are saying.

That's interesting, i have a Zelkova as a garden tree and it's buds are swollen but it's holding off longer than everything else apart from the Ginko as well. Never noticed untill this year.

I repotted mine this year and the buds started showing green tips last week and with the warm weather the first new leaves are out. South coast NSW here.

Canberra here, A large tree Zelkova in the ground near us is only just budding now. Ginkgo just barely started but underway. It was repotted in mid winter.

Same in Melbourne, the dwarfs are well and truly going but the straight species are just coming out now
