Playing With a Trident Maple

Post by Watto »

A few years ago I had three trident maple seedlings and three pomegranate seedlings and decided to bind them together, not all together but the tridents together and the pomegranates together.
The short story is the tridents went OK and the pomegranates, well that's a story for another day.
So here is the trident which I potted up today for the first time. Growing in a seed tray was a success I think as it provided a shallow root base which made fitting it into its new shoes quite easy.

Interesting!
Did you bind the length of the trunk together to do this?
I have often wondered if you need to remove some bark, like doing a graft, to achieve this or just bind them?
Thanks for sharing

I put a plait on it (as I did with the pomegranate) and the trident bonded in a few places. It is a little two dimensional but the exercise was fun.

I think one of the questions you need to ask yourself is - was it successful?
I would say probably not.
The next question is - is it interesting?
And I would say maybe. You don't want every plant to look the same so maybe some interest creates a talking point.
Will I show it when it develops - again probably not but I would take it to a club meeting so others can see how mad I am
