It's looking a bit messy isn't it Grant. Come on, everyone was thinking it... I just said it...

Can't wait to see how more ramified you have gotten it when you next defoliate and how much smaller the leaves will become.

I just went back and read this thread from the beginning again. It's worth a re-read everyone - a great progression.

I was wondering when someone would say it was a bit messy. I have only trimmed back the very strongest growth and left the rest to catch up.

I should then be able to defoliate and have the weaker areas stronger than before. Then wire etc and do it all again a few times this season.

As part of my talk in Gosford a couple of weeks ago I created 2 new very small ash bonsai from my many seedlings and made a small but significant cut on the larger ash to open up the front a little.

Pics soon but I am off to Perth tomorrow.

OK,

I removed a small branch right in the middle towards the front to open it up a bit.

It has bulked up a bit this year but still a way to go yet.

The foliage is starting to brown and fall off now; no colour.

i was just going through all the pictures of this progression and the result is absolutely AMAZING!!
i'm growing some japanese maples from seed at the moment, they're only a year old but i hope to turn them into bonsai with exceptional amounts of character like the example you have shown here.

Hi Ben,

Ash are very different to Japanese maple and the techniques are also very different. Big cuts on Japanese maple are much slower to heal and the pruning/pinching techniques also vary.

I would be growing Japanese maple in a graceful style whereas the Ash can look a bit more pugnacious.

Anyhow good luck with it and take notes and photos.

Its probably a bit soft looking for this tree but the tree will soften over time so it may end up being a good match.

The new pot looks a little bit deeper than the last one...nice!...any reason in particular for the change, or is it just a case of a new, fresh look?
I really liked the dark green pot too!
I like the slight change to the apex, thanks for the update!
Will you defoliate it as many times as all of your other ash this season?

It needed a slightly deeper pot im my opinion and I will keep looking for something more appropriate. I may donate the pot to the collection for the Satsuki azalea that is in need of a good pot.

It has been defoliate once and trimmed hard a second time as well already. It will be defoliated a few more times yet and some of the straightish looking branches on the left about 2/3rds up the trunk will be progressively regrown as well.

That pot would go really well with the collection's azalea if you do decide to donate it Grant!
The old pot was rather shallow for the ash, but it did look terrific! Thanks for the info on defoliating this tree Grant.

Grant, In developing branches in Ash do you commence ramification early or alternatively leave them to extend and thicken? I'm also getting most activity at the very top and from cuts at the base. I'm ok with the action at the top, but any way of stopping the wound growth and encouraging growth in the middle (above crackle) parts. Thread grafts?

The branches grow so quickly that once you have got the thickness of the trunk you want; you then start the ramification process as soon as you can.
