grant, a bloody good tree
With defoliating ash, if you had basic branch structure and you wanted to defoliate twice in the season when would you do it?

In Adelaide you can get hot weather fairly early so any time from say mid to late October and then again 6 to 9 weeks later for instance.Goff wrote:grant, a bloody good tree

It is important to control the strong growth by pinching it back early and allow the weaker portions to elongate and then to defoliate after that. Balancing the vigour on all trees is a fine art.

I put the tree in this very shallow pot last year (not too bad) but have a deeper one lined up for it soon.
Started wiring it today with copper and found it advantageous over aluminium. I have been able to bend the two branches higher up on the left that had grown a bit too horizontal.

Also a new pot for this one tomorrow; slightly deeper and light blue; not shiny; from a Qld potter.

Nice tree and love the documented progression...
From what you've described about the pot you've got on order, sounds like Steve McCallum?? If so, he's fantastic. I've had about a dozen pots made by him now. Here's one he made for my seiju elm.. Ignore the tree, it's only been in training for 12 months.
Can't wait to see your Ash in one of his pots

Yes, I bought 4 or 5 during the Canberra convention and then was given another 4 for my retirement from the NBPCA.

Sorry - was having difficulty attaching the image. Now I just need a few more years to have the tree get up to the standard of the pot.

Hi all. Sorry if anyone took offense to my picture post.. I didn't realize it was a bit of a hi jack. Was more trying to show the pot then the tree.

I feel it is a good fit as far as its depth and width are. In the sunlight the colour is an antique looking light blue.
I removed a very heavy surface root on the right hand side; I have sealed it with Kyonal and is still visible. I will cover it with putty in a few days to both hide it and help it heal even quicker.

Love it grant.
Tree and pot combo is improvement.

One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

Hi Grant , its a real treat in its new pot . It looks like a Flamenco- Spanish Dancer , no doubt a 360' viewing would give a worthy performance . Thanks for sharing .

It certainly has some movement going, although it is a short, overweight Flamenco dancer.alpineart wrote:Hi Grant , its a real treat in its new pot . It looks like a Flamenco- Spanish Dancer , no doubt a 360' viewing would give a worthy performance . Thanks for sharing .
