Jade - Portulacaria Afra- A plateau of re-growth

Post by alpineart »

A visit to Lake Buffalo yesterday I was surprised by the regrowth of the native vegetation especially the Euc's .The wife has suggested I do something with her jade cuttings for some time now so I put this together for her . A Plateau of regrowth represents the Euc's emerging re-growth after the bush fires

With a little effort and yes Karen was quite surprised with her new landscape .

Cheers

Nice little landscape :-)

Drove up to Taree yesterday and many of the trees south of here look like tall thin fuzz balls :-)
lots have not reshooted though so will be culled over the next few months to stop them falling on the roads

Hi kc , mate the area here is well out in the back blocks but excavators were knocking down damaged tree's before they fall across the roads .

With little of no regrowth at ground level the next rains will fill the lake and rivers with mud Its grubby now but we have more rains forecast later in the week .
The landscape is quite large 800 mm x 500mm Alpineart tray , Karen has it set up on a potting trolley so I don't have to lift it .

Cheers . alpine

Well - my neighbour has a jade garden plant with small leaves .... time to take some cuttings and play with my own forest. My reading suggests I take the cuttings and let them dry out for a week. I’ll pop in in a pot next weekend. Jade-haters - look away now.

Usually when I take jade cuttings I give them an initial water then stop watering until I see signs of growth. Keep them warm, the best time is actually in mid summer.

Alpine - well done with the landscape. I’m glad you don’t have to life it, jades are full of water and they get quite heavy!

Matt.

Hi MJL, jade haters are probably wannabe guru's anyway ,Go for it

Hi Matt s , the wife done a better job than I did when it came to taking the cuttings  mine failed or I failed to look after them .

Hi Boom64 , joint effort on this one , even just lifting it . There is a topic here somewhere , they are cement slurry soaked heshian bags, sand cast then rendered .I enjoyed the challenge , took a couple of attempts and now I cant remember the process for success.

Cheers . Alpine

G'day Ian,
I like it, I have a bunch of jade cuttings that are going well maybe i should do something similare. I was lucky enough to dig up a very old jade with a trunk aprox 6 inches wide at the bottom out of a friends yard on the day of the worst smoke here during the fires and its already covered in new growth.
I will try to remember to take a pic to show tomorrow.
Ian when this virus madness is over im really keen to visit.

Greg

Hi Ian sorry for taking so long. Heres the Jade I dug up during the fires. It amazes me how much growth Jades get. Im looking forward to selecting branches and getting some shape . Will definitely visit when things are better.

Regards

Greg

Thanks Ian, I was pretty happy when I saw the trunk and my friend said to take it. She had a few more around half the thickness of this one that looked good but the other day I went past and her whole garden was gone apart from the dirt.
Hopefully the frost wont hurt it too much in winter, I lost a couple jade plants last winter so I will try to keep them safer this year.
I will keep you updated with this one.

Regards

Greg
