I don't have any experience with peppercorn but have seen many mentions about them dropping everything and sooking for many months before resprouting. Maybe don't be too quick to the green bin with this one

Definitely gone unfortunately. I've already identified my next target though, and may have cut it back so it has shot down low by the time I dig it out. I think I have a problem.
