I dug to roadside Olives last season, and both failed. So, after seeking some advice from this forums finest, yesterday was D-day. Huge shout out to Alpineart, HUUUGE Thank You Ian.

As we speak, they are all residing in Seasol. But.. For how long? I have heard anywhere from not at all to 1 week. Everyone is different I suppose.
Now... The grow box. I have decided I'm going to go with Alpline's idea, (I hope I got this right Ian...)
Holes cut 20mm above the bottom of a foam box.


Filled to the drainage line with bluemetal...


These will be grown in a mix of clay balls and pine bark. The clay balls were round but I have crushed or broken them...

So, I decided to pot up 2 of these after work last night. As I said previously, I used a mixture of pine bark and clay balls from the hydroponics shop. Living in Bunbury, there isn't a lot of suppliers of soli type products.





I will get to the remaining one over the weekend. I need to remove some of the foliage, and I need to have a good look at what branches I want to keep. They will now reside down the side of my house, where they will get some filtered light, but not a lot.

I had some olive slugs that took more than a year to shoot even though they remained green under the bark. Others collected in the winter shot mid spring. I mostly remove all the branches and only have bare trunk and use sandy potting mix. Sometimes I have used nibbles at intermittent spots around the base, applied rooting hormone The best bit to use is the root section you chopped off. Turn it up so roots are in the air remove them leaving a stump at each point and then place in soil They make great clump forests. Later I will post a picture.

You have some nice looking specimens there, they should give you some nice multi trunk Bonsai.

I am about to have a crack at some Olives my self, I live down the road from you (Busso) My trees have straight trunks but I think yours will have better character. Mine are from a commercial olive grower that wants to cull a few. I am beginning to think about some ferral olives I saw on the same property that have grown multiple trunks....

For a potting mix I have used Pearlite. It is used as a filter medium in irrigation and you can buy bags of it from your local Ag supplier. It is very light, cheap,and does a good job.

Repotted this on the weekend. After removing the roots growing from the bottom, this is what I was left with.

repotted into mix of Akadama 30%, Pine Bark 30%, and Corse River Sand 60%. Made up 20 litres of soil. Slow release fert also. Have been misting with light seasol solution 2 times a day. Will take some more pics after work. Once again

Hi Raymond , mate they say these Olives are unstoppable , but I can kill anything . I have lost a big trunk collected with the local club a couple of years ago , mind you I didn't take my own advice , aftercare is the all important factor in survival of collected material or any growing plant for that matter .

I'm still testing out the lack of care , the difference between survival and death , plenty of neglect here lately but the "trainee watering assistant" {New Hired Help} has done a good job to keep things green and growing .
