First Defoliatiion for Largish Cork Oak
This is a cork oak I grew from seed sometime around 1998 from seed collected in Canberra. After growing on for many years in different plastic pots It eventually was planted in a 500mm plastic pot until a bonsai pot big and deep enough was secured. Last year in August with the help of some willing helpers it was repotted into the current grey pot.
The upright portion of the trunk above the first bend started out as a thickening branch but it eventually took over so I went with it. Numerous large cuts have been made to achieve bends and the scars heal over very quickly; a great feature of the tree as well as small leaves and corky bark.
I defoliated this tree a few days ago and just finished some wiring and reduced the height as well.
CD cases for size comparison. Today’s selection was RadioHead and Joe Jackson. It’s usually led Zeppelin, Talking Heads , Gotye, Steely dan or Alabama Shakes.
Defoliation will increase ramification and reduce leaf size a little.
Grant

Yes, one of my favourite references and song.
I loaned my van for a pickup for the collection and Sam noticed my music.
He asked If I liked David Bowie for the name or songs/music. The songs of course, I said.
My most favourite male singer/songwriter.

The tree is strongly coming back into leaf. The side that was facing north is coming into leaf the quickest
