rosemary find

Post by Moss »

Hi all,

Great community, wish I had found it earlier. I’m new to bonsai as I needed a hobby to fill my day after been stood down from work due to the lockdown. I have gone a little crazy and been shaping preparing approx. 1 per day.

On my regular trip to the nurseries I discovered a mature rosemary bush in the junk pile while looking for some Buxus. I fell in love with the twisted aged trunk and so took it home for $20. It was totally pot bound and had almost no soil in it. I remedied this as best I could and repotted. I trimmed back to see what was happening (possibly to much) and now will let it sit and recover till I get more direction on this.

I cant seem to upload pictures for some reason. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Andrew and welcome. The photos may be too large - try resizing them. Include your location in your profile so we can tailor help specific to your region.

Thanks Tony.

That was a little tricky. I had to download a resizing app on my phone.

Welcome Moss and may the bonsai bug bite.
I love rosemary as bonsai but I do find them one of the more difficult bonsai subjects. My advice would be to go easy on the roots at any repot and if you want to put any wire on, do it when the branches are young because they are notoriously brittle as they age.
Good luck.

Hi Moss . Looks great , I would cover the surface roots with mulch , preferably spagmum moss until the tree has settled in from the repot .

I found that out Watto. Very tought branches. Im trying to just use the shape of the tree to guide me right now not to much wiring.

Thanks Sno. I wasn't sure about the exposed roots. I was hoping that would be my new ground line and the roots underneath would take over for the ones on the surface.

I don't think I will do any more work to it till I know it's going to survive.

I have another 5 buxus and 7 or so junipers I got this week. I can't stop it's all I think about. So far I've been

*over pruning
*over wiring
*breaking branches
*not having a definite plan before cutting.

It's so adictive .here is a mini Lilli pilli I like the trunk so I grabbed it for $30. It naturally looks wind swept so I may run with that. This tree was potted really bad. 50% of the pot was full of foam and another 20%plastic bags. I did a repot and minor prune

Thanks guys. I will cover roots and leave it for now to let it recover which will give me a lot more time to research and practice on my other victims.
