Cedar Summer Root Prune

Learn by doing mate, worst that happens is you kill the tree, and fortunatly there are more than one cedar in the world.

I have repotted trees at all times of the year (generally though i avoid the heat of summer) with varying degrees of success and determined that what works best for me is early spring for deciduous and late spring for evergreen conifers, but that doesn't mean the same applies to you and where you are growing

I'd personally try to protect it from harsh sun after a repot, which i have done in the past when i was still growing cedar. Some wouldn't skip a beat, some would shed needles and look very unhappy for a month afterwards then shoot again. Young trees will be more capable of bouncing back than old ones, just see what happens and learn for the future what works for you and what doesn't

So why did you do it?

Because there's people doing summer reports with cedars so I wanted to have go myself and see if it's a good option for the future.

I was just trying to understand your motivation to repot given the tree didn’t need it. Whether it’s summer or not, I generally don’t repot without a reason. Hope it works out for you.

As has been mentioned, summer repotting is definitely a thing. I’ve seen old highly refined maple 60 years plus repotted in summer with a reciprocating saw on the roots and it grew back again.

Trees are tough for the most part; unless you are growing wildly out of their climate zone perhaps and then that’s a whole other issue.

Sure if you go ham on it and bare root it and hack the roots up then you are asking for trouble, but yes others repot cedar in summer without issue.

There is more than one way to skin a cat, and as with any significant work in trees the after care can make all the difference

I do my conifers year round - just not in the summer. I do most in the middle, to end of winter. I also trim few, if any roots.

Lets just all just have a zooper dooper and an Oak iced coffee with a scoop of vanilla and chill tf out.

The world isn't going to stop turning based on whether or not it was better to have repotted a tree now or later in the year.

I've had my boxer shorts in a bunch on here a bit too recently, time to calm the farm and be helpful and supportive

For us that don’t live in Victoria what is a zooper dooper ?
I use one part pine bark ,one part pumice and one part diatomite with a bit of zeolite . It’s more free draining than most mixes .

Think frozen syrup, but with as many artificial colours as you can point a Golden Gaytime at. And all packaged in sharp plastic guaranteed to make you look like the Joker from mouth lacerations. The taste of childhood.

Yes, after a root trim in summer (no foliage removed) I would put in semi shade for a couple of weeks, mist regularly 4 times a day for the first day and then just let it get on with it. Cedars do best in full sun so move out into sun to further harden off after semi shade(not directly from heavy shade. Too much shade will cause general softness and encourage sooty mould etc.

Is this what you do for “optimal” timing potting? I guess optima is for giving the best chance of survival and thriving.

Or just what you can “get away with”?
