I've been growing this shimpaku cascade for 10 or maybe even more years. Growth is slow but I have been using sacrifice branches to encourage the trunk to thicken.
I've left the final sacrifice branch on for a few more years to get it thick enough to make a decent jin. Today I decided it was thick enough and I couldn't wait another year. You may also be able to see that the sacrifice branch is becoming much stronger than the lower part of the cascade trunk - another reason for converting it now.
Before.
after
Still not entirely happy with the upper section which appears to be just a bit too dominant for a cascade style tree I think.
I'll now let the lower part recover and gain some strength before further work on it.
