Cedrus Deodara question

Post by Akhi »

Do I prune this cedrus Deodara now or wait till the shoots extend? I am not looking for thickening the trunk and looking to build ramification for this one.

I was taught to pinch deodar as the new shoots grew.
While the shoots are still green and flexible new buds can form at any needles so pinch new shoots as soon as you can get hold of the tips.

Not sure if waiting a little longer will affect the results (this photo is just a little later than I would pinch my Deodar) In any event you can always fall back on the previous shoots. New buds will almost always grow from the base of any branch junction and any smaller sub branch can be wired or used to,replace a longer branch tip.

Thanks for the information, Shibui.

My deodar was root purned and repotted at the end of winter. Should I pinch the growing tips or leave it this year to allow the tree to recover?

Thanks,

I still pinch deodar tips whether it has been repotted or not. It is possible to cut back after shoots get too long but it is far easier and more effective to pinch young shoots when they are still very young. I try to do mine even earlier than the picture you posted. As soon as the shoots are long enough to get hold of they are nipped out so there are only a few new needles on each shoot.
Still not too late to do yours though.

Thanks, I did end up pruning it over the weekend
