Pine needle mulch

Post by its_kano »

Sorry in advance if I'm posting this in the wrong section and it has no relevance to bonsai. Just a quick question, could I use pine needle as mulch in my garden beds to prevent weeds? I have access to allot of casuarina black sheoak trees nearby. I have read in the past that it can slightly affect acidity of soil but I'm not sure whether that is a myth as by the time the needles havebrowned then fallen off tree they are almost pH neutral. Thanks in advance for anyone that can assist.
Kano.

Pine needles do change the chemistry of soil and are excellent when used as a mulch for a veggie patch. I have had great success when I used broken down pine needles. The sheaoak however I do t believe is a pine so can’t confirm what impact it will have.

I've used sheoak needles as mulch on terrestrial orchid pots. Does not seem to worry the orchids and weeds still grow in them so my guess is no problem using them on a garden.

Thank you for your replies. I will trial the sheoak needles and see how I go.
