Agree with Daluke, don't stress about the form too much, all you want is a framework to hang the flowers off.

I'd get the loppers out for the right hand side thick branch that is forming the Y at the top, take that back to the first shoot off it to make it less distracting. Otherwise just build a nice vase shape for the flowers to work off.

Hi Mark, as Daluke said, wisteria are grown for the flowers. To that end I have a suggestion for the first wisteria in this thread, if you still have it. This is the first time I've seen this thread, but it was immediately obvious to me that if the first wisteria was mine I would make good use of that dominant branch on the right. I would take off the main trunk growing up and slightly prune the right hand branch to induce it to grow. I've seen several wisterias that have been grown as semi cascade with beautiful flower bracts hanging from them, and the scent is marvelous. Just my :2c: worth.
With the big one that you want to style umbrella shape a similar shape to my suggestion for your first wisteria is possible, and would be quite suited for it. I would re-pot it with the trunk leaning to the right. Then use the top right branch as the leader as this has good growth coming from it that can be trained to the left. I would then remove most of the other branches, large and small, with a result something like this.

I've never won any prizes for my drawing, but hopefully you'll get the idea.
Cheers, Frank.

Cheers for the prompt responses everyone!

R3 - the pines are flying - I’ll update soon.

Frank - through the wonders of modern technology - I just popped out into the cold night Melbourne air to update the photo of that first tree. (It looks better at night!Image) Your idea is still possible ... whatever else I am trying here - I can see hanging flowers (in my imagination Image).

I really like the way the wisteria has embraced the rock. Looks like the rock was always there. :tu2:

I am still struggling with this but I have cleaned it up this evening. Firstly, removed it from it's ground growing bed.... an amazing amount of roots and quite thick through the base of the plastic pot. It was good to trim those roots but I'll keep in this pot (positioned on the ground) for another year.

I have taken Daluke's advice and jacked up the right hand side a touch. I think it looks better - I am as yet unsure what to do with the part in the red circle. Perhaps remove the right hand branch? I have also cleaned up parts of the trunk too. It's enjoyable because of the amount of growth .... which give options. I have tried to draw the future but I am still a little lost. Thoughts welcome.

I think the green lines are heading very much in the right direction mate. I say keep the right hand branch (taller one) as it's a more interesting continuation of the trunk line and more believable for the climber nature.

Options as i see it:

A: Remove the left hand Y branch entirely. pros: Much smoother trunk like and most of the remaining branches are similar thickness making energy distribution and branch development more smoothly continued and controlled into the future. Con: Leaves a big scar and will take a fair few years to get real age into those young branches.

B: Leave the left hand Y branch but grow it to be a primary branch and work on reducing the acuteness of the next stage of growth out and away form the tree in maybe a 50-60 degree angle instead of a 30-40 degree angle. Pros: Gives a start point for creating depth of field in the branch structure for hanging the racemes off & no big scar. Cons: To make the scale of the thickness of that branch work the overall tree height would eventually need to be 2 or 3 times taller. It's always going to be that hard Y shape and unless the flowers cover it it will always draw the eye immediatly to it.

Just what i'm seeing and thinking!

Hi
Just wondering is anyone has the link to the "Ray Macaway's wisteria guide pdf" latest version as mentioned in this thread?

Thanks in advance.

Yep Mike, I think so.Image

Before making any chops I tried to design an interesting ‘dress’ to hang three sets of flowers but I reckon I’ll chop (something) this winter.

Very nice you don’t see white that often. Perhaps a different coloured back ground next year ;)
