Flowering quince

Post by terryb »

My quinces have lots of buds this year. This is Chaenomeles speciosa "Apple Blossom". The flowers open white and then change to a dusty pink. We have a vigorous cold front moving through over the next couple of days, hopefully it doesn't cause too much damage.

Was planning to repot after flowering has finished and then layering and cutting back later this year. I assume given how slowly they thicken, that healing cuts also takes a while? Happy to get some advice.

I've got nothing in the advice department, but just wanted to say the flowers look good. Mine are a couple of months away from flowering I think.

They do look beautiful :)
I'm surprised, I'm also in Adelaide but all of my quince - both japonica and speciosa - are only just starting to show tiny buds now.... I can't wait for them to flower like yours!
Very nice :tu:

Beautiful...I have mostly red varieties and after a spectacular flower show last year, this year has been pretty ordinary.
Just want to say that quinces are very easy to propagate by cutting. You won't need to air layer unless you are going for a thick one.

Almost all flowers are open now and I have started removing spent flowers.

My chojubai haven't gone dormant yet either, half dropped the big leaves but kept putting out young shoots, and half still looks exactly as it did. Been flowering it's head off for months now.

Interesting. I haven’t had a flower since last year.

What mixes are you using? I’m curious because out of everything I have these are the fussiest and slowest growers.

I think that Choj just flowers when it wants to but primarily autumn/ winter at least judging by when my flowers but it will flower on and off almost year round

Hard to give exact details on my mix like proportions but it’s the mix from my local nursery which is fine gravel and pine nuggets into which (specifically for choj) I mixed some coarse river sand. Also it gets a slow release pellet fertiliser, blood and bone and some sulphate of potash mixed in as well for background feeding.

The first year flowering was arse but this year it’s been 11:10. Main thing that has changed is a lot more sun exposure after moving house

these trees are likely telling us they are winter flowering species

My Chojubai flower almost all year round. Still the odd flower now but many more through summer.
Other Chaenomeles flower mid winter through to spring when there are no leaves on the plant. A couple of mine flower just after the leaves open so not quite as eye catching.

I haven't owned it long enough to figure out the optimal position, potting mix or how it behaves for my area yet. Based on Treeman's info in one of the other chojubai posts, I have my plant in 75% small pine bark (all except the fines) and I think it did a bit better this year. I have a dominant shoot which I have layered to try and bring back some vigour to the rest of the small clump. I peeked on the weekend and it looks like there are some roots but I will leave it on longer.

Mine dumped pretty much all of its leaves recently and has just started to re-sprout. I haven't had any flowers for the entire year.

As with many other species here in Adelaide, mine still have last years leaves on and I'm not sure whether they will drop them or not.
