Plum raft

I'm rapidly becoming a plum enthusiast. I've only got a couple but they're great fun.

This raft was bought from a friend who dug it up in 2015 at the same location as my other plum:

As usual I don't have any early photos, but it was just a log lying sideways with a few roots and shoots coming out from the sides. The first few years was spent just letting the shoots grow as strongly as possible, then I cut back and replaced the leader a few times.

The original log needs to be carved in a pleasing manner so I'm looking for examples to inspire me. The leaves are purple and the flowers are white.

Hi Matt , I repotted my plum raft ( clump , group or forest ) today . Mainly to get it out of a pot that was too large visually and frankly ugly . The pot will be reworked in time . Sorry about the background in the pictures , I am flat out remembering to take photos , let alone setting up properly. The plan is to try to reduce the leaf size this season .
Cheers
Graham
PS pictures are jumbled - this system is not friendly to old guys .

Matt and Graham - I bl@@dy love these! How do I get to SA and Canberra- you guys seem to have a heap of fun and great trees! Good stuff. One day I’ll do some road trips ... it seems forever away in lockdown though! Keep safe everyone.

That is a really interesting plum Matt and I will be interested in how you manage the old trunk. Looking forward to the next update.
PS - everyone should have a PLUM!

These are nice. Great pruning technique Matt. Graham that clump is sweet. Can we get a post when they flower? I have a consistent problem getting plums to flower well.

Cheers,
Symon

My plums vary in their enthusiasm to flower. Think it might have something to do with many of them being seedlings and therefore crossbred .

I gave this plum a trim today. There were only a couple of flowers this year but the ramification is improving year by year. I still haven't worked on the original log and I should do this soon as the branches are only going to get in the way as they grow.
