My large wisteria seems to have produced leaves a bit early this year. Normally I get flowers with just a few leaves open but this year the flowers are nearly swamped by the leaves.

I assume it is the one called 'Double Dragon' as that's the only reference to a double flower wisteria I can find for Australia. Cuttings were sourced by the usual clandestine walk by with secateurs technique after I noticed this growing on a front fence.

Nice . How do you keep the large one from blowing around in that small pot .

I had not really noticed how big the plant is now until you pointed it out. It is actually the smaller one in a proportionally narrower pot that does get toppled over regularly. I guess our protected location helps and there are lots of other plants close by that provide extra protection.

I will be looking at reducing the canopy somewhat this year of this bigger one - after flowering.

Those double flowers are lovely. A bit of a deeper purple than the standard flowers too by the looks of it.

looks like double dragon to me Neil. I have a garden one in full flower now

Hi Neil,

Peter Valder, author of "Wisterias, A Comprehensive Guide", on page 106, "Violacea Plena" he says that as far as he is able to ascertain, this is the only double flowered wisteria in existence. He does mention "Black Dragon" but refers the reader Violacea Plena. Black Dragon may be the commercial or common name.

Where can I get my hands on one of these double flowering Wisteria's in Brisbane? I'm mesmerised!

Search for local sources. If that fails order one from Shibui bonsai. I don't have any ready to go but can strike some cuttings. No problem to post small trees up to Brisbane.
