Fruit Identification - Crab Apple?

Post by Daluke »

I’m after an identification on the following fruit.

It’s about as big as an olive fruit.

Has some apple like seeds inside - I imagine it’s a crab apple of some type?

Thanks!!!

It looks like what I get on Malus "Floribunda" - other crab fruit is usually larger, with more of them.

Do you have any pictures of the flowers? There are a few that produce yellow fruit. Malus Sargentii is another.

Negative - will have to wait until spring. This is from a tree from the ‘hood.

About 2 x 4 m.

Certainly looks like a crab apple and fruits are just ripening now but there could be a few other things with similar fruit. One of the characteristics of apple is the arrangement of seeds inside the fruit. When cut across there is a distinct 5 sided star pattern.
Pics of leaves, leaf arrangement (opposite or alternate), bark and the overall tree shape would also add clues to the ID.
