Does anyone know if this variety of Wisteria is available in Australia? The racemes are supposed to grow as long as 2m

Wisteria Longissima is available. Try places like Yamina or Rare Plants. To my knowledge flowers are up to a metre long.

I wouldn't think it would be hard to find, both of mine (one 30 yrs ago and, when we moved here 11 yrs ago) were just surced from the local nursary. The racemes on both averaged a bit short of a metre but I am in the NSW Southern Tablelands (usually cold winters, hot dry summers) so in a coastal plains location like Melbourne they may grow a bit longer. My current one is on a pergola with other wisterias and certainly is a picture when it is in flower.

Get too hot in summer burning out the vines or is it that the leaf density keeps it cool?

We've had no problem with overheating though we can get into the 40 's at times in summer. As you can see the vines are thriving.

Certainly there is leaf density, but the steels are hollow tubes and are cool to the touch, also the bark would protect the vines, more so as they get older. The pergola has made a cool, almost airconditioned area ar the end of the shed to work in summertime.

I took a layer off the longissimo last summer using a low sideshoot which I had let grow for the purpose and am training it as an imformal upright. I'm hoping for an impressive display as the flowers cascade down passed the sides of the pot on an elevated plinth.

Thanks, I have a pretty big chinensis which I am (provided it survives) planning to develop as a meter + bonsai. But just researching wisteria has given me an idea to put up an archway much like what you have done albeit over our driveway, and longer the racemes I thought it might look better so that’s the 5 year project. Will keep you posted.
