Wisteria Longissia Alba

Post by kvan64 »

All of my other wisteria species have finished flowering except for this one. It's just started. The racemes of flowers double in length every 3 days and are still going. These racemes starting to droop today. The longest raceme is a 32cm. I guess they will be in full length (about 50 - 60cm) in a week time. I thought I should share the joy with people here.
Cheers,
DK

How old was it Ivan, when it first started to flower? My W. chinensis took fifteen years to get florid.

You are not alone Ken. Threes of my trees also missed flowering completely this year. They need heavy prunning and I may need to do the bare-rooting trick in winter next year. It works all the time!

Stymie, this one is over 20 years old but I didn't start it from scratch so I dont know when it first flowered. My uncle got one from seed and has been in the ground for 15 years that still does not flower.

Pruning as much as three times per season seems to be the way. Flower buds appear on the tips of new season's growth where it was cut back in late summer of the previous season.

The resultant flowers opened up in mid May here, the equivalent of November in the Southern hemisphere.

This photograph was taken on 15th May as the racemes were extending.

I believe this to be Wisteria sinensis.

Hi Dk :D

nice wisteria :D

Dom, wisteria can be some what finicky about flowering and it is said that they dont flower until at least ten years old, some varieties of wisteria will not flower at all too! so its one of those things that can be hard, the pruning tips sound like a good idea as the racemes grow from new branches :D
SHOHIN YAKUZA!!!
 taking the top half of trees of since 2005!
and growing trees for the future generations! 50+ year plans :D

Hey Kvan64 .... lol you know what, i probably have

Hi Stymie .... very interesting pruning advice... i will give that a go thanx.
By the way love the pics of your beautiful tree.

Hey Jamie .... thanx also for the reply

P.S.... Well its official the 8 - 9 year old Wisteria has been collected.....!

she wanted to plant a grafted rose or something in its place so being a loving & caring son i offered my services to dig it out for her ..... :D
it got a bit of a rough treatment and was somewhat bare rooted.... but is now taking a Seasol bath.
fingers crossed it likes its new home. :D
