Time to show off your figs (ficus)

Post by Jasonb »

Pjf, 27 years from seed. I'm the second owner as an elderly woman became too frail to care for it.

When I first got it in feb 2012,

After defol and wire.

And today.

Still a great deal of work to go, and I'm still not happy with the branch structure but I think I've got some good direction so far. What does everyone think?

I would be cutting the branches back hard, shorten them by about 3/4, and then build the ramification.
I did this earlier tjis summer on one of mine

Agreed.

However having said this the "leggier" look is kinda sexy ;)

Hi Jason

Nice Fig with good age mate. I would agree with cutting it back to make the nice trunk base more powerful by increasing the proportion. You will find it will give you more foliage easier to fill out more.

Good start to a thread Boics. It would be good to see a lot of Figs in one place.
Never had all mine in one place that I can remember, so here's some of mine. I think all of them have been on AB at some stage anyway.
I love figs and have been growing them for 28 years.

I'll have to take some more pics as some of these have not been updated for a while.

Lets show what we all have together. Even if they are only beginning be proud of your Fig and lets have a look.
Nice one Boics

Hi All,

Great topic, I know figs are not to everyones liking, but for me they're one of my favourites.

I like how you have styled it Jason, it has a graceful and elegant feel to it already, but in saying that I do agree with everyone that it would benefit from being cut back.

Mr Bebb, I love your Figs, each one of them tells a different story.

To add to the thread, here are a few of my figs that are all works in progress:

PFJ16.11.12.jpg
PJF#215feb2013.jpg
PJF412feb2013.jpg
PJF6#11Jan2013b.jpg
I have a few more that I will have to get photos of but they're being rebuilt from scratch (correcting previous mistakes). Look forward to seeing many other figs posted up.

Cheers

David

Here's my biggest Ficus. It's a work in progress, but given my location in cold, cold, Virginia, it's great material. I'm working on chasing the foliage back toward the trunk currently.

Two of mine. Ashamed of both at this stage.

The first is a domestically collected i've posted before. No carving here. Good potential but decided recently to concentrate solely on getting a good nebari before i work on any branches. Next season will be big uncontrolled growth and a few approach grafts to create some roots. Think this one has good potential though....

The first was given to me and set up by my dad. He placed some cuttings over a rock and they've kinda stayed looking like that. Looks a bit unnatural but keeping it for memory's sake.

I have between 50-75 figs of all shapes and sizes waiting on the back burner for me to come and pay attention to them :palm: All are in dire need of wiring but are extremely healthy. Here is a small sample.

Some really inspiring figs in this thread, keep up the good work everyone :worship: Goes to show the diversity of styling options for the species.
I won't post mine as they are all in developmental stages of growing on or just being chopped back to stumps. Perhaps in 2 more seasons.

Jeremy

About 300mm tall. F. Benji. Still deciding whether to make the back the front as the roots at the back are more interesting
