what do you think?

Post by Raymond »

After studying this forum, I cut back a couple of my figs. What do people think? Did I do anything wrong?

It looks like you have been collecting your trees from a golf course :palm:
In Melbourne I do not like to work on figs until November when the minimum night time temperatures are over 15 degrees. But I am not sure what your climate is.
I like the first one very much. The second has too many trunks/branches all the same length.

Q: Why are we all here?
A: Because we are not all there.

Raymond it is not the ideal time to work on them here in WA either, where you are near the coast it should not get down to freezing, but don't bet on it keep your figs as warm as possible.

The usual time for fig work is late October November onwards.

Thanks for the tips guys. They are in the most sunny position I have. I just had to do something, the inspiration since I joined this forum forced me to do it...

The first one I woud take off the back branch and repot in a few weeks tilted to the right some.
The first branch will come from the outside of the bend, and that will bring the apex over the base of the stump.

the other on I will remove 1 or to of the branches as they ll come from the same height on the tree and will create a reverse taper issue there later.

I decided to take this tree in a new direction. I turned it around and the large natural scar inspired me,

I really like it. Took the advice given and repotted on a slight angle.

nice recovery
I only defoliate when i want to reduce the leaf size for display. when developing i do not bother.
i would just pinch the tips to force backbudding to develop the ramification now

Looks good like the new front  it's the right time for defoliating but I would probably follow Kcpools advice and just tip prune this one. How is the other tree you posted fairing?

5 weeks on and this has settled in nicely. Defoliated and started wiring, but i ran out of 1mm wire :palm: so this will have to do for now. I am hoping it shoots nice and low on the branchletts so I can shorten them up a bit.
