New here, unknown bonsai species

Post by Rimradus »

Hey guys!
From NSW and new to Bonsais.
Always been interested in them but thought them too hard ro care for. Maybe I was right...

I got this little guy for a housewarming gift but we all don’t know what species it is and how to look after it.

Any advice and identification welcome please!

Thanks :aussie:

P.S we think it’s either a desert rose or ginseng tree, are we close?

Looks like a desert rose, has it ever flowered?

Never flowered or grown many new leaves owned it about 6 months now. Was unsure about the leaves going brown but it doesnt get much sun where it is.
If its a desert rose, needs lots of sunlight for flowers right?

Yes put it outside and give it plenty of water(in springtime), keep the soil moist but not soggy as this will emulate the wet season when they flower. Just remember to if you have dogs or cats that the plant is extremely toxic.

Thanks!
So in winter should I just water it every fortnight or month but keep it relatively dry? Or just don’t water it at all.

I would water it once a week in winter(or less), they will benefit from a re-pot at the start of spring and then i would water it once a day in spring and some liquid fertilizer every month and
you should get some nice flowers.
