Re: Aus Native ID please
i reckon your right about it being callitris mate, i dont think it is easy to get them to back bud on old wood. i think you need to do it slowly over a long time, not just one big chop and it will back bud like figs or melaleucas.

Re: Aus Native ID please
G,day John there are a few of them they are our own true conifer. I do have one so does Grant Bowie and Peter Hanrahan ( please excuse) if I have not spelt that right Peter.
I find that it is slowly slowly with mine as it is loath to put out new growth on old wood, I find pinching mine like a Shimpaku is best.
While I believe Grant cuts his back with scissors.
Cheers Pup

Wow!! That must've been hell, having such a magnificant example yet not knowing the name until now. Congrates on the ID, that deserves a beer..... Bit early in the morning for that though.
Regards, Mitchell.

Re: Aus Native ID please
Depends, like all on which one and where, any thing in a pot even a grow box is slow compared to the open ground.Jamie wrote:correct me if i am wrong pup but these are excruciatingly slow to grow and thicken to arent they?
The ones around where my Son and his Daughters live in Rockingham are over 100 and still only maybe 10 metres but they are close to the ocean.
some on Rottnest Island are actually prostrate as is mine or should I say semi cascade. 15 plus years still only 4cm trunk always in a pot.
Cheers Pup

for 15 years and a 4 cm trunk being in a pot the whole time isnt bad really, considering when in pot culture there development slows right down.
so do you treat these like a native with feeding and like a juniper or pine with pruning and styling? i presume the answer is a yes but i am just curious as i have a few in the yard that have self sown and was thinking bout pulling them up.

It is a native conifer I pinch it like a Shimpaku. All other cultivation is as a Native.Jamie wrote:cheers pup

Re: Aus Native ID please
Hello john boy, you have beat me to it. I am growing these from seed, 3yrs in now. Up until now i had not seen this as bonsai and have been very excited at the prospects. The fact that the compound leaf can be reduced so easily and then looks like needles is a real winner. Well done done i look forward to it in future, be watching out for ours. Gabriel and i are doing some good things with them. At some point i want to collect a large one, to work with. Until then i'm sorry at this point i cant answer your question of back budding on old wood.
This is a Hakea...Needle Wood.

Gday John & Co!
I can't give a positive ID, but I can tell you that it's not Callitris. I think Antonio is pretty close with his call of Hakea (check this link), but the pinnate foliage could also indicate Grevillea.
Nice tree, by the way!
Good luck.
