[SOLVED] What type of plant is this?

Post by BGM1971 »

Hi
I just purchased this nice little tree from the Orient Bonsai Nursery in Reservoir.
It's a gift for a friend birthday. I really liked the bark on the tree.
The tree didn't have a I.D. tag with it. They told me that it is a "Japanese Box".
Is this correct?
Hope someone can help me.
Thanks
Brad

yep its buxus harlandii, great bark, large ones are quite expensive. here are a couple of mine :D the one in the pot is quite small. the other one is 75-85mm across the base and is still in a training box.

Buxus harlandii for sure. This is my twin trunk. Bloody nuisance.... so sloooooowwwwwww to develop. Could be a very nice shohin if it just threw out a few more leaves. It is about 16 cm high

Hi
Thanks to everyone that replied. :D
Now that I know that it is definitely a Japanese box, I can let her know the best way to care for it.

Thanks

hi mel thats a nice tree you got there :D

i have found with mine as soon as they get put into a pot they virtually stop growing. i have my biggest one in a grow box and it is going well. i will fully develop it in the grow box before it goes into the pot, i beleive thats the only way to get them to be where you want. i have also noticed they hate there roots being disturbed, my two little ones nearly threw every branch they had when i potted them up, my plan with the big one is to slowly reduce the rootball. the grow box is larger in a horizontal area, but reasonably shallow, so i only need to reduce the horizontal plane of the roots :D

Ash, i believe Japanese Box refers to Buxus microphylla. Buxus harlandii is commonly referred to as the Harland Box. But then again, common names suck. Either way it is definitely Buxus harlandii.
