[Category 2] Babingtonia (Baekia)

Post by kcpoole »

Tree was purchase as one of 3 from a garden centre closing down. It was in a 6 inch pot and severely root bound.
Root pruned quite hard and potted into an orchid pot to recover.Top of the plant was cut hard to generate back budding, and then initial branch selection done.
The new apex and branches were wired as they Lignified and set in place quite quickly

Trunk has increased about 1/3 during this time so growth is quite rapid,

Species:- Babbingtonia
Purchased:- October 2010
1st work:- October 2010, Repot and initial Branch Reduction
1st Styling:- January 2011, Initial Apex / Branch selection and wire

Planned schedule for Bonsai pot end 2011.

Stumbled across this thread tonight, and wondered why I never finalised the comp? :palm: :lost: or updated the thread with new pics?

I took some updated photos today of this tree to continue the thread by adding some of them from the intervening years.

Thanks all glad you enjoy :D

these are a cracker of a tree to have as they are quick growing and easy to maintain. Can be styled into any shape using wire or clip and grow.
if you only have 1 native bonsai, it should be Baekia (Babingtonia)

Great progression.. Very inspiring! Took something that on the surface looked ordinary and turned it into something great... Will keep getting better too.
