more shohin in development and a couple on there way . tridents have been cut back now the budding hopefully in the right spots begins . The twin trunk corky elm has its lower branch thread grafted .

One of the root over rock trees looks a little familiar. Hope it develops really well for you.

Mate both came from you. There starting to bud up so lets see what i get in 12 months time. I did take alot of elm root cuttings this year after repotting too , looking forward to spring

Hi Noah, Hiro was telling me about a technique used in Japan these days for developing a central leader on zelkova broom style trees, they drill a hole right through the centre of the trunk starting at the root base and coming out through the centre of the scar, then thread a seedling through the hole and grow it until it fuses with the rest of the tree.

So they are using it to heal the scar and fill a gap in the crown at the same time? Simple, brilliant and time to buy some long drill bits I think .

Hi Mojo/Noah, as you probably know the Japanese zelkova brooms are very formal trees. It has always been a problem for them to get a straight leader coming up from the flat cuts, this new technique seems to have solved that issue.

thank you heaps for the shots, they are looking great! love the little shohin elm it will be a treat soon! are you planning on getting some more horizontal branching? I have a liquid amber that i am growing into something similar, might have to try the little technique craig said, dont know how it will go with liquid amber, i am growing it for winter ramification though, not its foliage, the trunk is a bit over an inch thick and will ony stand 6-8 inches.
