[VOTE] Shohin Progressive Styling Competition 2011-2012

Post by Steven »

Image

The objective of the AusBonsai Shohin Progressive Styling Competition was to create the best possible Shohin sized bonsai (under 250mm tall) from raw, untrained stock over a period of 14 months.

We originally had 167 entries but due to several factors, 134 entries were disqualified or withdrawn. There were a couple of these entries that were stunners and it was a real shame to see them out of the running.

Please find following, in alphabetical order based on the artists name, the 33 finalists in the AusBonsai Shohin Progressive Styling Competition 2011-2012. The 3 highest ranking trees based on your votes will each receive one of the stunning hand made bonsai pots with matching accent pots which were kindly donated by Vic Harris or Erin Bonsai. Please select your 3 favourite trees from the poll above and submit your vote before 16th November 2012. The results will be shown progressively as the voting takes place over the next 2 weeks and the winners will be announced here on AusBonsai on the 17th November.

Please feel free to post your comments about the entries, the competition or even suggestions for future competitions.

Regards,
Steven

Best of luck to all of the entries! I was surprised by how far some of these trees progressed in such a short time from raw material.
Steven and the AB team thanks for putting on the shohin comp it has been great watching the trees develop over the last 14 months.
I think that competitions such as this add so much to this forum and I look forward to many more in the future.
Well done Ausbonsai
I am glad that AB has a shohin section in the forum and this comp has really contributed to it  so please contine to update these trees in the future so we can see how they mature.
I have learnt a lot so thank you.
Cheers, Dario.

I know I am not alone in 'not finishing the race' so congratulations to everyone who made it this far in the comp

Its amazing to see how far they have all come in the 14mths but there are some definite standouts, I voted for one that I didnt think had a hope at the beginning!!! I have learnt so much from following all the trees that I hope the comp is repeated again in the future so I may try again....

It's hard to make up my mind, because some entries show really nice shohin, while others may be a little less showy, but they are the result of especially good technical work. Even though only a relatively low percentage of entries made it right to the end of the competition, they still bear witness to the fantastic possibilities that exist in creating shohin bonsai, regarding time, variety of plant species and variety of styling. Thanks, Steven, for allowing the AusBonsai members to prove that!

Well that has been a very difficult task and I have made my decision now :o  I had to have 3 rounds of volting myself to whittle them down to only 3  Thanks to all that pulled out as ou made our jobs much easier

There are a few Very outstanding trees in this lot, and some more that will be excellent in a few months or years! I hope everyone that enteerdd will continue to develop these trees and that they post updated photos of them in years to come.

Thanks to steven for the opportunity for this Comp, and hope everyone enjoyed themselves like i did, and that everyone learnt a lot as well.

Was wondering what comments wer gunna happen when the voting started.
This is a stunning tree in real life too, and by far worth winning regardless who owns it :-)

Another fact that few know, is that Steven has an innate ability to make any tree look bloody nice! He has a very real talent to make beautiful things out of very good material. A real artists eye :imo:

For me it as quite a privilege to see his trees every tuesday night

Yes great competition...

It really does showcase some very talented individuals among the forum.
Really there is so much to be learned from the methods and techniques used to achieve such outstanding results in such a short time (in Bonsai terms).

Great thing is that competitions such as these encourage new data and ideas to be shared with all and improve the overall quality and caliber of this already awesome site.

Who's now got a Casuarina on their shopping/christmas list?

I know I do.....

Well done all.
One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

What a great competition,a few great trees were entered...I think there should be more comps, like all the time, constantly. great for the spirit of bonsai, i'm just saying that ,because i did not pick a good tree,(slow growing libani)withdrawn..., but seriously, whats wrong with having these competitions on going, not just one class of bonsai, but a few comps at the same time,,, any one out there want to do another shohin comp? :hooray:

What's wrong with that idea? Just that it might make a lot more work for Steven & moderators, and people would get tired of it after a while. The excitement of a competition is partly caused by the fact that it is an occasional, outstanding event.
I'd love to see all the shohin entereed here in another year's time, though, including those that were eliminated but are still alive.

Thankyou everyone, especially Steven and the mods involved.

It was great to follow the progress of this competition, and see some impressive improvements in a short time. Very inspirational.

Can't wait for the next comp.
