[LLK] - Zelkova serrata

Create the best possible Shohin sized bonsai from raw, untrained stock over a period of 14 months between 1st August 2011 and 31st October 2012. Entry posts must be made by 31st August 2011.

Mine is the only Zelkova (Zelkova serrata) that I have ever seen in shohin size. I would encourage others to try it, because the well-known fast and multiple branching of this species has stood me in good stead. From a meagre, tall cutting with an ungainly trunk and branches that couldn't be used, it has grown into a true shohin, thanks to a cut-and-grow regime, and from an old nursery pot it has gone into a fairly small bonsai pot. Full size Zelkova are usually styled as brooms, but I hope to style this shohin as a small tree with at least two tiers of foliage. The leaves are a little big and may need defoliating, at least in part. I guess I'll have to be economical with the fertiliser. It will be hard keeping it below 25 cm, but I'll try.
