Questions are coming:

How much more branching to you need close to the trunk? Is that a high branch...if it is maybe to cut it to reduce vigor..create tapper even if it is mid way branch? I have note done yet branch development...but I have just started. I am asking since for that branch to me it looks that it has enough branching close to the trunk.
I could not figure why you did not reduce some more, and why you removed some completely.
P4
You dont think you left the right branch too long...no movement and tapper on it???
P5
Ay aya ay! I can not figure out why You did some of the things you did. total confusion here. I see something that looks like knobs??? or that is not knobs? Are not knobs formed when you cut several times at the same place?
P7
Is this one of the lowest branches that you wanted to thicken? Why did you not let it grow some more so it thickens more?
Your tree looks very nice...I love it.
Hi Neli,

P3 : I think there was some lateral space between the two, and I am trying to develop into two pads at different heights. I can't always cut back as far as necessary as I don't want to risk shading out the branch. I will have to monitor swelling at the trunk, but for now it is not a problem, so I'm going to leave it in place.

P4: Same as above. I want to keep the branch going, and will need to cut back later for movement. I could probably have cut it back more, and may well do so now that you point it out!

P5: he knobs are caused by having too much growth stemming from a single point. this can be caused by budding that is not controlled or by repeatedly cutting back to the same point. Normally I cut back to a point ahead of the bud that I want to activate, and being an elm, it will probably activate a few behind the cut. I can then select the correct one and remove the others along with any knobs.

P7: Yes, this is the lowest right hand branch. I do want it to thicken up, but I'm in no rush and want to try to preserve taper. This tree is no longer in the compo, so I can take time to work on it instead of rushing for an outline shape. I may actually chop that longish branch coming out to the left in the pic as it comes from the knob caused by previous pruning. I don't want that getting much bigger, although, that said, I may force the knob bigger to make it look like a nest, and then put a little bird in it.

Hope that answers your questions.

Cheerio,

Andrew

Thanks andrew! So many things that I did not think about...and need to...
About the lowest branch, I would have grown it thicker...and then chophard and regrow like a new leader for tapper and movement...but not sure if that is OK.
I ask lots of questions that sound like suggestions. Please remember I am a inquisitive newbie trying to figure out why You made a particular decision, in order to learn.

Just remember Neli, that the thicker you grow it, the greater the taper step between growth seasons. I'm in no rush, so no need to grow too long between cut-backs.

What are the implications of the greater the taper step between growth seasons. Is that bad or good?

Guess that depends entirely on what you like, but I'd hazard a guess at it being less natural lookin', and that would be accentuated in a smaller tree where you only have about 10cms from trunk to outside foliage.

Hi All,

Just a quick update on my old compo tree. Needs a bit of light winter pruning to get it ready for the next growing season, and I have a "new" pot in plain brown with a motif which I'm considering repotting it into when it starts to bud out.

Cheers,

Andrew

Thanks guys. I'm in two minds about changing the pot . . . . . . I'll post a pic of the new one when I get home. I'd like to hear opinions.

Thanks for the compliment Meagi!!!

Here it is repotted guys. What do you think? Prefer the new pot or the older one? Had to take a big root off to get it in, but it should be ok with a stroke of luck!
