Some more update for this one. I found that it getting pretty cold here and the leaves on this one started to drop. The roots have also been coming out a lot from the bottom telling me it started to be root bound in a way. To speed it up, I defoliate this for the third time so I could do the root work. This will allow me to defoliate once more just about 3 weeks before the end date for the competition.
I have also done some root trimming and repotted in a different pot. This will also be the pot that the tree will stay in.
The tree was exposed a bit more to show the trunk lines of all three trunk. I am happy with the current design of the tree. The reverse taper from the mother tree has now become a great selling point - the nice base for this new triple trunk tree.
I left the wiring untouched at this point and and I am afraid that the wiring will have to be left on at the end as I feel that it need more than this to set for flowering quinces.
I also trimmed the overgrown mother tree.

Hello judges and members
It has been a year since I started training on this entry. The tree has just entered it’s flowering period and probably is at its best shape at the moment (even though it does not have as many flowers as I expected this year). Besides I am planning to go on holidays in the last few weeks of the competition. I would like to submit the final pictures for this entry so I do not have to worry about missing out.
There are some highlights/strengths that I found for this progression that I would like to mention as below:
1- The ability to see a potential tree in even the most difficult/challenging stock tree
2- Choice of suitable progression that may not be conventional for training shohin - Trunk chopping would normally be the choice which may not be suitable in this case as the stock tree has undesirable base.
3- The improved air-layering technique (learned and refined from members of Ausbonsai – The credit goes to many Ausbonsai members here). This allows training of the top part of the tree while waiting for the roots to develop during air-layering and helps speed up the training process.
4- Multiple defoliating in one growing season in parallel with suitable fertilizing and watering regime that helps reduce leaf and flower size as well as improving ramification for the tree.
There are also some weaknesses including the use of too thick wiring to keep the secondary branches in shape. As the time is limited I find the need to leave the wire there and hope that the judges will see this as an on-training feature of the progression. Please also note that this is the final submission but the training process for this tree is going on. I am planning to continue with this training rate for at least 3 more years before the tree can look more like a decent bonsai.

Stunning progression! I think the amount of flowers is perfect on this tree, makes me think of a tree that's been through seriously tough times. Tells a better story I think than if it was covered in foliage and flowers.

The trunk lines all look very tortured, absolutely masterful styling mate. If the flowers were really healthy and there was lots of foliage, it might clash with the impression that the trunks give.

Wow I thoroughly enjoyed your post. Very methodical, well planned and executed. I had bought some flowering quinces home from work and the possums ate every single flower. Next step.....possum trap!!
