[Chipper5] Hokkaido Elm

Post by chipper5 »

• Species name: Hokkaido Elm
• Original height of stock: 15cm, now slightly smaller
• Where you obtained it from: Same as the maple, A sales table at a bonsai show members of the club were selling their unwanted stock 1 year ago
• Cost of stock: Again around $5 (I think)

Can"t we spot a new user with 23 posts a bit of extra time, given that it is highly likely that he/she did not know of the picture size limitations of this site.

Crikey people, this ain't Kokufu.

Cheers,
Mojo

Ahhh fingers crossed :fc: - just resized the pic size on my camera and went and took some more pics (hence the awful flash!) so at least now everyone can sort of see what they look like...

the Crikey wasn't aimed at you Brett, just a shout from the rooftop at any ears in the area.

The important thing is this comp is underway and has a lot of participants of all skill levels, with field grown trees, collected trees, young nursery stock and older stock trees well represented. Is there a prize for the most reckless tree kill (the "Ambition meets oh bugger award")? I'm a chance if my little Trident has any ugly surprises waiting for me below soil level tomorrow. I can't say I was doing great root work in 2003-2004 and from memory it was a timid wave of the shears as well.

Cheers,
Mojo

Chipper, that is good raw material for this event and in your climate you will get a decent rate of growth to build the tree.

Cheers,

Here are some better daytime photos I just took- lower res so I could get them onto the site! I haven't decided on a front or back for this one, all I've done since I got it was put it in a bigger pot in the hope the trunk would thicken up a bit- which it has (although not as much as I was hoping). I think it was possibly a cutting or even a root cutting. The branches have just been left to grow wherever they want so hopefully I'll have a few good options to choose from.

Well with this one I thought the "front" was going to be the top picture- but after much thought have decided the front will be the bottom picture and have removed the big branch coming out towards the front and slight right. I have kept the other two on the R) and L) as the first 2 branches but have reduced them in sze and have cut the tree back quite hard.

Am now hoping this will encourage a bit more branching and we'll go from there :fc:
