Harry it depends on if you think growing is training.
If I started to pull down and wire the branches, that would be what I would call training.
I will let the judges decide that.

Barry, I take training as meaning anything done to the tree to develop it as a bonsai. (after the initial cut back and root prune if its a yamadori).

Very nice lilly pilly, interesting way to develop taper in a bonsai.

IMO as a Moderator this tree was collected and brought home on the 13-11-09 , , chainsaw cut on the 27-8-10 , , and by September 2010 it was well under way in it's training for Bonsai. We'll wait for the Judges decision....viewtopic.php?f=58&t=6051&start=0&hilit ... lillypilly

Hi Chris
You could be right.

If you trim the roots of a young seedling like black pine or layer a tree that hasn’t been good enough to be a bonsai, then they could be classified as the beginning training.
You could also say that once you purchase a tree that it is the start of training.
Then how do you classify a tree bought as bonsai stock, to a tree that is old nursery stock.
Or something dug out of the ground.
There is a fine line to cross some were.
I will leave it to the judges.

According to the requirements to be met. The Moderators make this assessment, as to whether or not it meets the requirements, not the judges.

That is how I read the instructions for entering, the competition.

My understanding of this entry is, that it be in the ANBA.
