[Rowan] - Luma apiculata

Post by rowan »

This one serves me right for closing my eyes to choose trees for this competition. We'll see how this goes, it might be a fast grower. It was originally meant to go in the garden.

Species: Luma apiculata
Height: 40cm
Where from: Local nursery throwing out some old stock. July 2011
Cost: $5

Not much I could do to this tree. I have just cut it back to around 20cm and will now wait till it shoots out to choose the new branches. Not sure on the eventual style yet.

This little tree is starting to put out a lot of new growth so I will start choosing branches and tip pruning this coming month.

This tree is putting out lots of growth but the internodes are too long and tip pruning is not helping at all, and the leaves are getting bigger. I think I might have to put it where it will get more hot afternoon sun. I thought it was getting enough light but I will try more anyway and see if the leaves will reduce back to normal.
In the next couple of months it will get pruned down to around half now that I know it backbuds well.

Please ignore the background window, it was unavoidable at this time.

I have done nothing with this luma for the last couple of months. Like the others I have in this comp I am letting it grow and thicken for a while before doing anything drastic to it.
I put it in the sun and the internodes are becoming a lot shorter so I am fairly pleased with it but I think it will need more time than I have to get it looking good.
