[FlyBri] Tilia Cordata Stock

Post by FlyBri »

Gday folks!

I figure it's about time I start getting involved again at AB.c. Here's my entry for the Shohin Competition:
Tilia_cordata_0811_01.jpg
Tilia_cordata_0811_02.jpg
Tilia_cordata_0811_03.jpg
Species: Tilia cordata (Small-leaved Lime)

Stock Height: 680mm

Purchased From: Sertel's Nursery, Doreen VIC

Cost: $50

(I know that $50 is a lot to spend on a stock tree, but I couldn't resist the fine branching and textured lower trunk. Besides, I have been forever envious of Mr Walter Pall's Tilias - maybe in 50-60 years, mine will be comparable to his. For what it's worth, I think there's a little broom-style tree hiding in there.)

Thanks, and good luck all!

FlyBri.

:gday:

So, having spent so much on a stock tree, I thought it wise to do a little research about the species with regards to Bonsai culture. Here are a few links that I found:

https://www.bonsai4me.com/SpeciesGuide/Tilia.html

viewtopic.php?f=129&t=7664

https://www.internationalbonsaiforum.com ... 131&p=1286

https://www.bonsaifocus.com/gallery/18/t ... rdata.html

https://walter-pall-bonsai.blogspot.com/search?q=tilia (You'll have to scroll through a number of different trees to get to the Tilia, but that's not a problem with Walter's trees... ;) )

I haven't found much in the way of practical advice, but lots of visual inspiration. I hope to start work on this tree later today. Of all the Tilia pics I looked at, this one is the most like the material I have at hand (it's yet another of Walter Pall's):

Stay tuned. Thanks.

Gday John!

Great tree you've got there - I love the ramification you have achieved, as well as the very impressive root-flare! Of course, mine will need to be about ⅓ the size of yours if it is to qualify as Shohin.

Thanks for sharing!

Those main trunks are too thick to wire, so I'm hoping to get a lot of back-budding over the course of the growing season. Looking at it now, I think my 1 year timeframe is probably a little ambitious...

Thanks.

I don't know if I've achieved much in the way of actual movement, but the process has made me feel like I'm taking positive action.

More pics when the thing gets some leaves...

Thanks.

Gday folks!

I hear that there's a deadline approaching, so I thought I'd better update:
Tilia_cordata_0212_01.jpg
So, had I known how well the Tilia would back-bud, i might have chopped it back to this when I first bought it. I think I'll be pushing my luck to achieve anything even half convincing by the end of the Contest.

Thanks!
