Juniper out and ready to work.
IMG_0273.JPG
After this photo I didn’t have time for any more.
I wanted to get it back in a pot as fast as possible.
I split the trunk in two places to bend for a semi-cascade, then drilled and cut out clearance for the bend.
I then put glue through the splits and wrapped with bike tube rubber.
Next 2mm copper wire from the base to the end of the braches, bend and hold with a cable tie, repotted wired and cable tied in position.

Wired and laid out the pads.
Next photo in three months (Dead or alive)

Wow, I have never seen foilage pads spread out and attached to plastic mesh like that before.

Cheers,
Mojo

Me either, but i can see a lot of reasons why it would work. Only downside i can think of would be untangling or cutting it off when the time comes. Could you share some info with us on this one Aussie.

I use heavy duty gutter mesh and plastic coated wire.
I use the plastic coated because I have it, you could use 1mm and 11/2mm bonsai wire.
IMG_0282.JPG
I first wired the branch to the shape I want, I then secure the mesh to the base of the branch and if it’s a large pad I will secure at the end also, with wire or cable ties.
IMG_0283.JPG
Next I position the branchlets and hold them in position with U shaped wire, if it needs a bend I place the first wirer were I need to bend the second wire holds the bend in position.
IMG_0284.JPG
On the other side of the mesh you can see I don’t twist the wire I just bend them over, it makes it easy to remove.
I leave the mesh on till the pad is complete and I usually trim the mesh to the shape and size I want, the mesh stop any growth drooping and growing down also holds every thing in its place even if its bumped weeding, watering or the possums at night.

Saw that type of arrangement done on everything in Vietnam. Looks effective but only if you want dead flat bottomed pads, no up and down movement.

Interesting technique, why not just wire to the tips? I can see the benefit of no downward growing buds, I am keen to see the tree progress.

Do you have another example of what the branch looks like after you remove the mesh? Is it very flat?

I have let the pads grow more than I want to let the caved area callus.
