Re: AusBonsai Shohin Progression Competition 2013-2014
I've been keeping up with all the entries as they are posted, and this is shaping up to be quite the competition! With some still not yet submitted, I'm really excited to see what happens with all these trees. Lots of really nice material from some really experienced growers, all the way to new people with interesting or unproven stock. Waiting for April 1st is almost worse than waiting for Christmas at this point!
One question I recently thought of - would there be any problem with putting the same tree in multiple competitions? I can't see anything against it in the rules here, so assuming that all rules are still followed, would we be allowed to submit to local comps or comps on other sites? So as not to be cryptic, I am referring specifically to the ofBonsai competition, and note that I have not checked their rules to see if this would be a problem.
Thanks!

You may want to check the ofbonsai rules Karl - I recently removed a thread for a member as he said the ofbonsai competition trees had to be exclusive

Re: AusBonsai Shohin Progression Competition 2013-2014
I would assume this tree would not qualify for entry into create?
Leptospermum laevigatum
From seed about 10 yrs ago and then all last 9 years in a 4 inch pot and roots into the ground. Roots into ground cut off and as it was very lanky the trunk and some branches cut back to encourage back budding. No styling as such yet.
Transplanted into bonsai pot last September. Height currently around 30cm. Grant
If not able to be entered I will keep the thread updated in parallel.

Has the trunk or any of the branches been wired? Has clip-and-grow been used?Grant Bowie wrote:I would assume this tree would not qualify for entry into create?
These seem to be the major no-nos of the rules.

Re: AusBonsai Shohin Progression Competition 2013-2014
This is the only thing that might disqualify it. As I understand the rules, they allow for branch removal, but cutting back to get back buds or ramification would be considered training. Any chance of removing said branches?Grant Bowie wrote:some branches cut back to encourage back budding.
Either way, looks like the makings of a very nice tree!

@grant i would think the tree would not be eligible unless the cut branching is removed completely.
there are other trees not allowed for that specific reason ( MattA), and Mojo has specifically stated that the branches in his trees that have been cut ( to promote back budding) will be removed when work on the trees can commence

Re: AusBonsai Shohin Progression Competition 2013-2014
Hmm,
No wiring or shaping has been done so OK there.
There are about 4 branches that would have been chopped at the same time as the trunk; but if I remove those it would set the tree/styling back so best not to enter it.

I think I'll remove the branches from one of my entries before the 1-April photoshoot just to be sure. Seems like the safest route.kcpoole wrote:@grant i would think the tree would not be eligible unless the cut branching is removed completely.

Re: AusBonsai Shohin Progression Competition 2013-2014
When are we going to know if some trees are disqualified?
I ask lots of questions that sound like suggestions. Please remember I am a inquisitive newbie trying to figure out why You made a particular decision, in order to learn.

Sorry for the delay but I've been OS for the last couple of weeks and missed your question.
Unfortunately due to the trimming of branches it would not be eligible to enter unless you were to remove the branches.
Great stock and if you are not prepared to chop them off then I do hope you will still share the progression with us. Or, I'd love to work out a deal to get it onto my bench!
Regards,
Steven
