This stock has not at all been styled yet.
I ask only beacause I have posted a virtual on this perticular tree.
If the virt was by you Damian and no styling has been done then it would be okay. If in doubt, post a picture of the tree and a link to the topic.

Looks to me like you have pruned the branches to shape the tree which would be classed as Prior Styling.
Meagi wrote:In the refine category if tree has been sold but was in 2011- 2012 contest can it be re entered by new owner with permission from previous owner to take to next level ?
With permission from the previous owner this would be okay.
xtolord wrote:Do you mean no virtuals from "spectators" only or no virtuals from the participants too ?
No virts from others as this would be unfair assistance and not the owners idea. Your own virts are fine.
Andrew F wrote:Tooth picking classified as styling?
No, root work.

If anyone else has particular questions regarding their trees eligibility it would be beneficial to post a picture of the tree in this thread.

Hi Steven,

Firstly, a big thank you to yourself, others who assist in the running of this and the sponsors for another competition. I missed out on the previous one, but enjoyed looking at the entrants and it seemed that alot of fun was had by all.

I have a question about the rules and if possible, could it be clarified please. It is in relation to 'Root work' and in particular I have highlighted the area's in question that seem to be at odds with each other:
STOCK
Stock can be obtained from anywhere provided it is RAW, UNTRAINED and no prior STYLING has been done other than TRUNK CHOPPING and ROOT WORK. You can collect, purchase from a bonsai or general nursery, take a cutting/layer from an untrained tree or you may already own suitable stock. It just cannot have had any previous Styling!
Our definitions of key words are as follows;
RAW 'not processed, refined, or treated in any way'.
UNTRAINED 'a plant, bush, or tree has not been made to grow in a particular way, e.g. by pruning, wiring or tying it.'
STYLING 'an instance of creating something, especially something artistic, in a particular or idiosyncratic way.' This includes but is not limited to wiring, clip and grow or any other means that has changed the natural growth tree. Previous trunk chops, branch removal and work done on the roots are acceptable.
TRUNK CHOPPING 'an aggressive pruning typically on the trunk of a bonsai, which reduces the height of the trunk significantly.' Removal of branches from a trunk is also acceptable.
ROOT WORK 'the reduction of the root system that occurs during the periodic repotting of a bonsai.'
The way I have read and interpreted that( which to be fair I could be completely wrong) is that some root work is fine, but some isnt and thats where I am confused. If possible, I would be greatful if someone could expand on that further. I know it seems like a silly question, but I would rather bare the shame now instead of making a silly mistake further down the road.

Cheers

David

Hi Meagi
I would love to see further refinement of the same tree/trees in the hands of a new owner.
Q: Why are we all here?
A: Because we are not all there.

G'day David,

Any work done on the roots of your entry is fine. Repotting, cuttings, layers, root over rock, planting over tile or CD etc are all okay.

woo VERY excited by this one. watched last years with great interest, well from when I joined the forum anyway and have learnt a lot from reading back over the updates for everyone's entries.

Thanks Steven and the contributors for putting this on again and letting us have even more fun with our wee trees.

I know this is annoying but I really want to be in the comp... got no delusions about winning it... however I would hate to be disqualified. I have questions about two specific trees I'd like to enter.

Phone photos, sorry. But I think they'll give you the idea...

No 1 Buxus harlandii
Buxus harlandii.jpg
This one came from a bonsai nursery and has had a previous trunk chop. My next move with it would be another trunk chop. Is this regarded as styling? I think probably yes but like everyone I want to get into it.

No 2 Ficus rubiginosa
Ficus rubiginosa.jpg
Another from a bonsai nursery and appears to have had no previous work. Branches shortened so as not to shade out its mates at the nursery but no styling. Again my first move with this would be a trunk chop. Seeing it would be done now but on an unstyled tree, is this considered an acceptable previous trunk chop?

Thanks for clarifying this lawmakers.

Cheers,

Ces.

the PJ fig looks fine to me Ces, so should be OK.
the Buxus tho might be borderline. How was the movement put in the trunk? if wired then I think not allowed but if they are from trunk chops only then should be fine.

I would post both and if the Mod team have issues with it with better photos then we can discuss it individually.

FYI to all.
when you post your trees and posting on others competition threads, remember this is a competition, and thus all work should be the work of the owner only.
No posting styling advice on someone elses, and no asking for ideas from others.
Also No posting of Virts on other entrants trees, although you are encouraged to create your own Virts so you can pre design your trees and make styling decisions
Good Luck and fair comp to all

Now What trees will I enter?

Just to clarify Ken,

The fine print part of the conditions of entry state that you can give advice but are you saying you connot give styling advice. You probably need to be specific on what advice you are allowed to give. I only bring this up as I had caused some confusion in last years comp with a similar incident.

Please clarify for all.

I cannot wait to get my entries in and intrainning. I loved the comp last year and I learnt plenty from it.

Cheers

AusBonsai Shohin Progression Competition 2013-2014

Post by MoGanic »

Hi again, quick question - would a trident that has been formed by plaiting three trunks together be allowed? No branches have been worked on except for cutting back long shoots...
There are many ways to do things, but only one "best" way.
