Lets get this competition started!!!

Work can commence from now and will continue for the next 18 months. Remember you must make a minimum 3 monthly progression update including photos, an overview of work completed and experiences. Updates must be made within the following EDST periods;
1st April to 30th June 2013,
1st July to 30th September 2013,
1st October to 31st December 2013,
1st January 2014 to 31st March 2014 and
1st April to 30th June 2014.

This year we have 27 continuing in the REFINE category and 260 entries into the CREATE category. Almost double the entries of the last shohin progression comp. Our passionate shohin friend, Mr Mojo Moyogi will be one to watch as he has entered no less than 35 trees and some of them have been excellent choices in stock.

When are we required to repost entries with newspaper date and hight with standard measuring device?
Damian
There is no need to post a picture of your trees with a newspaper to prove no work has yet been done. We will just trust that everyone has stuck to the timelines. If you have started work early then aphids will infest your trees. :tounge:

The photo with ruler doesn't need to be submitted until the final photos on or before 1st September 2014.

I'm really looking forward to watching the trees progress and the friendly competition encourage everyone to increase their skills and experience. Hopefully the updates will be informative and regular so everyone can learn from the experiences.

Regards,
Steven

35 entries from an admitted shohin addict with some good years of experience is a bit intimidating! Good luck Mojo, and everybody else. Time to start training some trees!

Leptospermum laevigatum

From seed about 10 yrs ago and then all last 9 years in a 4 inch pot and roots into the ground. Roots into ground cut off and as it was very lanky the trunk and some branches cut back to encourage back budding. No styling as such yet.

Transplanted into bonsai pot last September. Height currently around 30cm.

Grant

If not able to be entered I will keep the thread updated in parallel.
G'day Grant,

Sorry for the delay but I've been OS for the last couple of weeks and missed your question.
Unfortunately due to the trimming of branches it would not be eligible to enter unless you were to remove the branches.
Great stock and if you are not prepared to chop them off then I do hope you will still share the progression with us. Or, I'd love to work out a deal to get it onto my bench!

Regards,
Steven
No worries,

I have started working on the tree and taking photos for a thread. It turned out there was really only one branch that had been chopped; or it could have even been considered as a second trunk; but that branch is so vital to the design that I could not chop it off.

Grant

I would like to ask a question regarding the health of a particular tree, and how it will be affected by a planed procedure. Are we allowed to ask that type of questions, and will it lead to disqualification.

Steven wrote:• Discussion, advice and comments in the entry threads is encouraged, but please "No Virtuals".
Sounds to me like such discussion is definitely allowed, and even encouraged. Just remember you have to do all the work yourself. If I remember correctly, virtuals were actually even encouraged as long as they are done by the submitting artist.

At least I hope I remember right, otherwise I just disqualified one of my own trees by both asking for advice and posting my own virtual! :|

Thank You Karl! I think they mean virtuals by other people, not by the participant. That is very good newas.
I am going to check your virts now. Check mine too on the pomegranate also and let me know what You think.
