Corky Bark Chinese Elm

Potted into a colander and allowed to grow.

Species name = Corky Bark Chinese Elm
Height = 500mm
Obtained = Layered off one of my stock trees
Cost = Time and effort

Hi Boics,
Thanks mate. When I saw the trunk I couldn't just cut it off and throw it away. Decided to do layers with both trees. It would take several years to get the same girth from a seed or starter tree.

Should be lots of fun watching all the trees in the competition grow and develop.

Just curious with stock like this and the rules of the comp. To me this trunk appears to have a fair bit of work done to it prior to it bring air layered off. This is where i think the huge numbers of questions is coming in with what is eligable and what is not. No complaints here as i have decided not to enter the comp, but the more entry photos that roll in, the more people seem to see different starting levels of stock.

btw great tree in the making!

The way the rules are set, they allow for pretty liberal trunk (and root) work, even trunk chops. Just no branch work except removal.

Hi k2bonsai,
The only work would have been the trunk got chopped off. The reason for even doing that would be that it was just getting to tall. I have a limited space for my bonsai, so every now and then I will go around and chop the tall trees. Just makes my space more tidy. I have a number of layers that haven't had any work done on them. These would be mainly trees I have used when doing Air Layer demonstrations. Hope that explains the early history of the tree.

I'm pleased with the bark. This is one of the reasons I have been extolling the virtues of air layering. I could have cut this piece off the host tree and threw it away. With this bark and diamater it was to good to throw away.
