[bretts] Gum

Post by Bretts »

Species: Again I don't know the exact species of this only that it is a gum.
Original height of stock: 200mm
This is a self seeded tree from one of my pots. It was tossed around in the yard with a broken nursery pot all last season. This caused some of the trunk to die but what is left looks quite vigorous. I recently potted it into this bonsai pot so it would go on the bench for a little better care. This is working so far as I have started to grow fond of it's character

I am making it up as I go along with this gum but for some reason I think I will let it grow out over Winter. Hopefully I can get some ramification into it after it warms up and before it's photo shoot :fc:

Far out this makes we want to start trying my hand at natives!!!!

Where does everyone get their material from?!? :lost: I have not seen natives being sold as stock at bonsai nurseries...maybe I should just check out some local nurseries and see what has bonsai potential?

Re: [bretts] Gum

As I stated earlier this gum rolled around the yard in a pot most of last growing season. I figured it was a tough species and it has not let me down. I am still learning what is the best pruning method. Some times if you don't let a branch grow out enough it will die back if cut. Since repotting into this blue pot it has not been allowed to put on a great deal of growth so the priority now will be to let it grow out strong and learn more about controlling the growth and ramifying the branches and reducing leaf size. It was a pity that the lower deadwood rotted away which has reduced the base width but one thing I will not do these days is try to control dead wood rot. What will be will be. I think in time this will be a great shohin.

As I said I have just let this one grow wild to recover it's strength. I will be listening closely to the tree so it can tell me when I should trim it back hard again.
