[Neli] Tamarind-Tamarindus indica
• Species name Tamarind-Tamarindus indica
• Original height of stock 80cm
• Where you obtained it from Rose garden nursery
• Cost of stock $1
I had planted it in the garden to grow it by the escape route method, and tried to airlayer it to get two plants from one, and to see if it can be airlayered....but will cut the top now. I dug it out yesterday.

I transplanted it...and looks like MHSRIP....I shall still wait and see.
Never new tamarind is a difficult plant to transplant and you need to reduce the roots slowly a bit by bit.
Well this goes thowards school fees.

I removed the airlayer...and scratched it. It is not dead yet but no shoots yet. If it shoots I shall make a progress report.

I had a bud before I left and now I have 100 branches.
I have like 10 branches coming from each point. Just removed some of the branches, and I am really puzzled what to do with it. It is a very weird looking tree. Thought of making a broom from it not not sure how it will look in that style with the type of leaf it has. Need to think and look at it better to decide what to do.

Re: [Neli] Tamarind-Tamarindus indica
Does any one have have tamarind? I am very impressed with this tree.
How many of you have a tamarind tree?
I love tamarind...for the following reasons:
1 grows fast from seed
2 It is African indigenous tree
3 makes fantastic bonsai
4 it self ramifies
5 it has very fine twigging
6 forms mature mature bark very early
7 it gets beautiful twisted roots for exposed root style
9 it back buds on small branches from every node
10 nodes are alternate
11 branches naturally weep so it is good for weeping style also
]Leaves lie flat on branches.
12 branches are very flexible even if lignified.
13 very easy to care for, vigorous grower, and not pest or diseases that I have seen.
detraction (my observations)
1 If trunk chopped it gets 100 shoots from the edge of the cut surface (even if no node present) and if they are not rubbed off on time it forms a bulge. It back bud only at the cut surface...and not bellow as oppose to young branches that bud all over.
2 hard to root reduce. Needs to be done at the right time and in 2 stages. But it recovers fast from root prune.
3 forms very straight taperless trunks and to create movement and taper needs to be trunk chopped and leaders regrown.
some exmpes for you od tamarind, and mine as well. Need to carve it on top.

Points 1-13...you've convinced me, I want one. Just did a quick google search, they make for some pretty impressive trees.

I was afraid it will make a big blob on top so I savagely chopped it.
