[noUpdate][shibui] olive

2013 shohin comp olive 4.JPG

2013 shohin comp olive 1.JPG
Species; Olea europa - olive
Starting height: 18 cm
Source: Collected from a friend's paddock
Price: travel 18km, 20 min work????

This is one of several olives I dug while on a club dig in Nov 2011. The main trunks were reduced when it was collected and it has been regaining strength since. Some suckers have been removed from the base.
This tree had been browsed by the deer and was already compact when I dug it. It also has quite small leaves so may suit shohin better than most olives. It is currently in a 30 cm orchid pot.
please excuse the red gum. It germinated in the pot last year but is not part of the competition - has had several trims to keep it in check so ineligible to enter anyway. Time to get it out of the pot so the olive has more room to develop.

No work done yet on this olive but I have removed the redgum seedling from the pot to give the olive a bit more room.

It is time to make some decisions about this tree and get some training started if its to develop into anything in the comp timeframe.

I've decided to use all 3 trunks and try for a triple trunk tree with this one - after all, olives naturally grow as a clump with lots of trunks and with the growth rates of olives I'm not likely to be able to develop really good branches in just 12 months so let's see how the 3 trunks fill out the tree.

ps The redgum seedling is enjoying having a pot to itself and has grown strongly since I removed it in March.
I just tore it off the side of the rootball, trimmed any remaining roots quite hard then cut back the top a bit to match and potted it in my standard mix in a 15 cm plastic pot.

Bugger! Just discovered I have failed to post the required update  so now this one is out of the comp.
Might as well continue to update its progress though.

Growth has been good. New shoots on branches have been pinched to encourage ramification in the branches. The leader on the major trunk has been allowed to grow freely to increase the height a little.

Being an olive I have also been busy rubbing new shoots off the base of the trunk.

Another update for this olive.
I am a little surprised at how well this tree is growing. New shoots are constantly growing and it is time for another trim.

Not only the branches need work. This being an olive it produces copious suckers from the base of the trunk which I rub off every week or so.
Even shoots this thin and new are pretty tough so I have trimmed with scissors.

This olive has continued to produce copious suckers from around the base. Now I remember why I gave up growing olives all those years ago :palm:
Here's the latest before and after for this one. Foliage pads are bulking up nicely. Pity it is out of the comp
