[Michael T] Buxus harlandii (2)

Buxus hylandii b.jpg
Buxus hylandii a.jpg
Species name: Buxus harlandii
Original height of stock: 72 cm
Source: From a Bonsai Nursery 10 years ago
Cost: $6

Ten years ago it was a small plant compared to now. It has always been in a garden pot. Throughout that period it was repotted twice. Could be difficult to form a nice shohin for the time restriction involved, seeing that the plant has a slow rate of growth and the growing period here is short. I'm giving it a try anyway.

The pruning of the plant is up to the final stage for this season. It will take this final prune into winter and hopefully it will have lots of new shoots in spring. This might then make life easier if there are more choices to make.

Although it is the 3rd month of Spring, plants in Canberra are very slow in growing. You can see that there are hardly any long shoots to make it worthwhile selecting and wiring. It may take another month if the weather is warm enough.

The plant has grown more bushy with more branches than the last posting. It might be possible for me to style it, but if the branches are far too short, then I might have to wait for spring.

The vertical main stem has been cut off. Trying to train the side branch. When the branches are much bigger, I shall start to style the plant. We are going into autumn and then winter. The plant may not be growing too much now. May have to wait for spring to style if I can't make it by the end of autumn.

I think I shall have to bow out of the competition with this plant as I did not have sufficient time to work on it.
My apologies to all.
