Good,

In another 3 weeks or so you could defoliate again and re wire.

Hi Grant, As you can see by the attached I have defoliated again on the 31st Dec.
I have not wired yet as I need some advice from you before I start.
You can see by the pics that there is quite long tip growth on a lot of the branches and I would like to ask should some of them be reduced before wiring particularly the ones around the mid to Apex section.
Also is there any particular fashion that I should wire eg: branches down & tips up.

Thanks for your help

OK,

Yes shorten the long tips now as this was probably the last defoliation for the year and it would be good to get the pads/ramification started now.

Wire the longest portion of the branches lowest, then wire the medium length portions over the top of the longer ones and wire or allow the shortest portions to be over the medium length. This way you get 2 or 3 layers on each branch at least and they don't shade each other out. This builds ramification very quickly and compactly.

I wire branches down at least below horizontal and tips relatively flat rather than down. If the tips are wired down extremely the new growth will do a 90 degree bend to go for the light.

Have not taken a pic of the wired defoliated tree yet but will do so when this heat is gone.
In the meantime I am interested in your comment that it would be good for us to get the pads/ramification started now.

The compound leaf of the ash which has a number of leaflets growing from the leaf stem make it difficult to envisage exactly how they should be treated to create pads/ramification.
Any guidance on the next development phase will be appreciated

When the tree is defoliated the branches look exactly the same as any other deciduous tree. This is when we can wire the branchlets down; this encourages complexity in the look of the branch and the act of bending down encourages back budding u the branch if you know what I mean.

Please re read my thread on Ash here.viewtopic.php?f=7&t=8119&hilit=+Ash

Hi Grant,
I have finally got around to taking a photo of the tree.
There is some shape starting to appear but the bottom RH branch is showing up as being rather high on the trunk.
Not sure what I can do about this.
Any comments you have on how I can improve it will be most apprecitated.
